Richard joined the rugby club through the mini section within a month of it's formation, bringing down son David, having become disillusioned with football. Mike Magee quickly spotted his potential and soon had him roped in alongside Tony Steward (who Richard knew through cricket) in off field activities.

He helped with the formation of the first mini festival and later the first mini rugby tour. Marking out junior sized pitches with his knowledge was also undertaken.

He reacquainted himself with former pupils from Drax Grammar and also made many new ones at the rugby club . He continued to watch and show interest till his passing.
