Two of Selby RUFC Junior Girls teams head out of town to their respective Yorkshire cup Finals this Sunday 27th April 2025
The Under 14’s Clustered with Yarnbury RUFC will take on Cleckheaton in the Inaugural Yorkshire Cup Final following a wonderful rugby journey over the last 4 years. Starting out with 5 girls from Yarnbury and 6 from Selby, that group has now grown to a combined squad of 21. The fixture is to be held at Huddersfield Laund Hill with a 1.30 pm KO>
The Team, undefeated this season, and will put that record on the line against old friends and rivals Cleckheaton on Sunday 27th in what should be a great game and advert for junior rugby, and the great things that are going on at Selby RUFC and Yarnbury RUFC Junior girl’s sections.
A tough encounter and last-minute Quarter final victory against Castleford, has seen the girls grow in confidence and they had their best display of the season in the semi-final victory away at Scarborough, to book a place in the first girls u14 Yorkshire cup final.

It’s the last few seasons that has laid the foundation, and this season it has all fallen into place. With impressive displays of skill and determination. Built on speed, physicality and hard work, the girls are playing a very entertaining brand of rugby.
Coach Paul Randell “The group are brilliant to work with and are improving all the time. The girls work so hard in training and the enthusiasm they have for the game is fantastic. Linking up with Yarnbury has been brilliant and Steve Riley and the Yarnbury girls echo what we are trying to develop, it’s a great fit both on and off the field. We have seen the playing numbers increase which is awesome, and we have a talented group, so we are looking forward to the final, and whatever happens, this Season has been a massive success.
Joint Captains Lucy Force (Selby) Charlotte Riley (Yarnbury) said “We are excited for the final, all the girls are looking forward to getting out on the pitch. The season has been great so far and we have one more game to go. We know if we play well, we have a great chance, it’s a challenge we are ready for”
The Selby U16 Girls team are also set to cap off a remarkable unbeaten season as they head into the final of their inaugural Yorkshire Cup on Sunday, facing off against West Park Leeds. Fixture kicks off at 2.30 pm at Malton & Norton Rugby Club.
This season marks a significant milestone for girls’ rugby in the region, with the Yorkshire Cup being contested by girls’ teams for the very first time. The competition’s introduction reflects the growing strength, skill, and recognition of the female game across Yorkshire—and Selby’s U16 squad have been at the forefront of that rise.
A testament to their talent and hard work, 11 players from the Selby squad have earned selection for the Yorkshire Development Programme and have proudly represented their county this season. Many of the team also take part in Selby’s own junior development programme, further honing their skills and commitment to the game.
Head coaches Con Usher and Kevin Lamb have built upon the foundations laid by previous coaches Ian Ramsay and Paul Bradley, creating a cohesive, disciplined, and highly skilled unit. Their leadership has seen the team go from strength to strength, and their efforts are paying off in a truly historic season.
With many of this year’s squad moving up into the U18 ranks next season, Selby RUFC is actively looking for new players to join the team and be part of the club’s continuing success. The ambition is clear: not only to defend their place in the Yorkshire Cup but also to step onto the national stage in the coming year.
The team is also seeking sponsorship partners to support their growth and share in their future success. With the momentum they’ve built this season, the Selby U16 Girls are a team on the rise—and one to watch.
Jack Coates, who joined Selby this year as the Girls CDO, stated “It is a fantastic achievement to have both teams in the Yorkshire Cup final on Sunday.
Having only been at the club a few months it has been brilliant to see all of the hard work that goes in from the coaches, players and wider support networks of the team.
