Selby U13s travelled to Old Brodleians’ West Yorkshire ground for their first away game of the season. Selby started the match by kicking-off downhill; unfortunately the match, from thereon, proved to be an uphill challenge. Old Brods quickly put the first score on the board, winning possession from a Selby ruck and moving the ball out through their centres to the wing who touched down – a tactic that the home team were to repeat time and time again. By half-time Old Brods had scored five tries with no reply from the Cygnets. Selby’s performance improved in the second half but, with the notable exception of Ollie Uren and Sam Perrin, tackling was poor, there were handling errors between the backs and the forwards’ late arrival at rucks often led to loss of possession at breakdowns. A succession of penalties in the middle of the second half brought the only Selby score of the game, courtesy of an Ollie Uren kick. Selby did start to look a bit livelier in the last ten minutes or so but it was far too late. Although the score-line made for bleak reading Old Brods are a very good team, amongst the strongest the lads will meet this year; hopefully they will be able to build on the lessons from Sunday to deliver a strong performance against Sheffield in next weeks’ Yorkshire Cup tie. Ollie Uren was Selby’s Man Of The Match.
