The match between the two local rivals kicked off in bitter conditions, exacerbated by a stiff breeze. Handling was going to be a challenge, and the first ten minutes proved difficult for both teams, though Selby had the better start.

They managed to string together a few nice phases, stretching Goole’s defensive lines, and ultimately created good space on the right for Henry Dennis to exploit with his pace, enabling him to go over for the first score in the corner. 0-5.

Despite Selby maintaining good possession and territory, Goole’s defence held well despite struggling to get out of their own half. This changed however when a couple of Goole’s backs broke the line in quick succession, enabling them to draw level by scoring in the corner. 5-5.

At half time, Selby’s team were clearly reminded about where their strengths lie. A disallowed try for Selby after a knock-on spurred them into real action, with forwards and backs starting to work much more effectively together, resulting in quick ball, and more pressure for Goole to try and withstand. Sam Edwards spotted space from stand-off, and placed a deft kick for Henry Dennis to run onto and score Selby’s second. 5-10.

Almost immediately afterwards, Harry Edmunds made a terrific break for Selby and offloaded expertly to Tom Nicholson who ran on at a great angle to scythe through Goole’s tiring defence, and touched down under the posts. This was duly converted for a 5-17 Selby lead.

The Selby pack again dominated immediately, with particularly good work from Max Wotton. The backs then handled deftly despite the wind, and got the ball out to Henry Dennis on the wing for his hat-trick. 5-22.
Selby were to go on and seal a convincing victory with two more tries. Harry Edmunds made yet another great break, and was able to go it alone to score for a 5-27 lead. The final impressive move of the match came from James Bramley evading a tackle at outside centre, and off-loading to Ollie Weston who finished nicely for a final 5-32 scoreline.

Particular mentions go to Freddie Giles who played very nicely until an Achilles injury forced him off the field, and to Connor Thern who acquitted himself well in his first full match in the Selby pack.
