New Bloods step up and show spirit.

With a number of experienced players away on half term holidays and a few stuck in airports it was the turn of the new boys to show what they had in the tank.

The shape of the Selby side lining up for drop off was not one that its ardent fans would recognise.

With no hunt at ten, stoker at eight, the assassin, socket and Wright all missing the side was filed with new faces who owing to the long bleak winter had managed to get very little (if any )competitive rugby under their belt.

This then was the side who took to the filed to face a Pocklington side who had recently beaten West Park.

However what the lads lost in experience they made up for in courage and effort.

From the start Pock looked confident running the ball at Selby and testing the defences. Harrison at ten had a dodgy start to the game as he found himself under pressure on the first few attacks. Making some poor decisions initially he settled down and started to move the ball well and also provide an attacking option up the ten channel.

Taylor who found himself at inside centre settled down and started to make some good piercing runs and provided good ball to his outside backs who threatened down the left wing.

However it wasn't long before the experienced Pock team started to apply the pressure and Selby found themselves fighting on their twenty two to keep out the wave after wave of Pock attacks.

However fight they did and both wingers acquitted themselves well with Hogg making a number of excellent tackles and Begg dropping onto a ball and hold his ground against several much larger
players.

Pock eventually scored through their forwards not from lack of Selby effort but more due to the lack of time of this team playing together which meant they often found themselves with the wrong men in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Not to be downhearted Selby came back at Pock and with good ball won from the second row by new man Hope and with a driving run from Leighton found themselves on the Pock 22, Harrison won the ball from a tackle retrieve and found Stoker (who despite playing 8 found himself on the wing) who broke thorough to score. Raddings playing at loose head kicked the conversion.

In the second half Selby continued to play with spirit and passion but found themselves outplayed by the more experienced Pock team. New wings Anthony and Cliffe showed tremendous spirit in helping to hold back the Pock attacks and the whole team played as a team with spirit.

McLoughlin at scrun half looked livley and just needs to be aware of where his ten is and he will progress well in the postion.

All in all some of the senior players should look to the efforts of the new men as they showed the spirit and never say day that is a trade mark of the Green Machine.

The final score does not reflect the excellent performance of the team and despite the loss pride was restored in the Selby badge.
