Selby U13's Make Last Six in Yorkshire Cup

In the aftermath of the snow and rain Selby U13's found themselves in a real battle against a Huddersfield side who would not give in.

Selby started brightly and from the off they dominated in the set pices with Smith at tight head making it an uncomfortable start for the Huddersfield lose head. This coupled with Raddings usual agresive performance and good work from the rest of the pack meant Selby set up a platform that should have seen them dominate the game.

The good work in the set piece came off when from a scurm Wright at 9 broke bind side and set up a ruck that Selby won and with a drive from Leighton and Genn, the ball found its way to Raddings who went over for a score.

Huddersfield not daunted by this worked hard in the loose and started to win ball from Selby with excellent work by their forwards.

The pressure of this finaly told when Selby found thensleves overcomitted at a ruck on the left wing and it was a simple matter for Huddesrfield to spin the ball wide to allow then winger to go in for a try despite a brave attempt from Leetham at full back to stop him.

For a period the game was very even with Huddersfield winning the ball at the breakdown but Selby's robust defence and big hits in the tackle disrupting the Huddersfield game plan.

Selby finaly broke the deadlock with a excellent tackle in the center by Foster forcing the ball loose, Stoker picked up and broke two tackles to make good ground down the right wing he was supported by Harrison who made his usual jinking run only to find himself brought down just short of the try line. He managed to pop the ball to Raddings who dived over for a try.

Back came Huddersfieldand just before half time they again won good ball at the loose and Selby failed to make a couple of key tackles which allowed the center into score.

Selby started the second half well and the backs began to take the offensive with good work from Wright at Scrum half making an number of penetrating runs. Harrison and Foster at centers had been making big tackles all day but now took on the Huddersfielddefence from a scrum at half way quick ball from Wright to Hunt found the big ten making a stright break at his opposite number. Hunt made a lomg pass to Harrison who steped inside a Huddersfield player and found Foster comming short at pace. Having made 15 meters Foster was doubled tackled but found Harrison who had looped around to take a pass on the outside and with only the full back to beat he steped outside to go in and score under the posts. Hunt converted.

Selby then switchhed off and for a ten min period they only stayed in the game by some excellent defensive work mostley in their own 22. Eillot coming off his wing made a number of try saving tackles and McCloughlin and McCoy worked tirlessly to disrupt the Huddesrfiled attack. Finaly the wall broke and as much from tired Selby legs as anything else Huddersfield went over to make the score 17 15 with 5 mins to go.

Selby to their credit picked themselve up and from the kick off applied pressure to the Huddersfield attack. They forced a number of mistakes and found themselves with a line out on the Huddersfield 10 meter. Winning the ball as they had done most of the day they brought the ball inside in an attempt to set up Hunt for the drop kick. At the ruck Huddersfield for once lost their discipline and gave a way the penalty.

Hunt steped up and showing tremendous composure for a young man made the kick.

Huddersfield came stright back from the kick off, after a few heart stopping moments Selby got the ball under control and then out to Wright who kicked to touch and thus eneded the game.

Selby will now face West Park away in the next round.
