Selby under 13’s progressed to the second round of the Yorkshire Plate competition with an impressive 19-5 victory against a well organised and determined Huddersfield side.
The Selby support was out in force in what was the second trip to Huddersfield this season, with the match official thanking the Selby parents for their constructive comments during his early decisions.
Selby dominated the early stages with some forceful runs through the forwards with prop Jack Smith and second row Jack Gallagher prominent. Fly half Henry Bayston also kept the pressure on the home side with some useful cross field kicks for the Selby backs to chase.
In an even first half both sides won good ball on their own scrums with Selby stealing some good line out possession.
The ten minute spell just before and after the interval proved pivotal for Selby.
Following pressure by the Selby pack a loose ball from the scrum was kicked ahead by second row Riley McDonagh who outpaced the chasing Huddersfield backs to score in the corner, giving Selby a slim 5-0 lead at the break.
Head Coach Ian Ramsay’s team talk sent the boys out in positive mood for the second half. A high kick from Bayston put the Huddersfield full back under pressure. Whilst Huddersfield recovered the ball, measured pressure by the Selby forwards led to a kick on Huddersfield’s line being charged down with Henry Bayston the first to the loose ball. The conversion was successful to give the visitors a 12-0 lead.
Huddersfield came back into the game. A positive passage of play by the home side led to a Huddersfield winger evading two tackles to score. The lead remained at 7 points with a difficult conversion being missed.
Selby found themselves under pressure. Huddersfield worked a backs move to give them an overlap but Alex Marsh made a last ditch try saving tackle to avert the danger.
This proved a turning point as Selby retained control. Centre Connor Newbitt continued to make some surging runs from inside centre. He was well supported by fullback Joe Ramsay who caught every high ball, using his pace to run the ball back at the home team.
The Selby forwards went close to another score with Huddersfield keeping themselves in the game with some desperate defensive work. However, Selby’s determination proved decisive. After Huddersfield had conceded penalties on their own line the Selby pack created space with Henry Bayston scoring under the posts. The try was converted to put Selby ahead 19-5.
Despite some late possession Selby’s defence held firm to secure a deserved victory.
The Selby back row got through some solid work with Ben Lodge remaining on the field, despite sustaining a bruised cheek.
The Selby backs also linked well with the forwards making some impressive tackles. It was a pleasing performance from the Selby team in their first season of the 15 a side game.
