Great first half performance

The U16s boys travelled to Yarnbury for the first round in the cup thankful for a large squad. Missing players through injury and a late call off due to illness, Selby needed to be at their best to match their opponents.

Start of the match on the 4G the fog had lifted and the Selby boys seemed up to the challenge. Unfortunately an early penalty to Yarnbury gave them the lead. After this Selby had 20 minutes camped in the Yarnbury half putting pressure on them. Could have, would have, should have scored but for a wrong choice or mistake and the strong Yarnbury defence. Yarnbury's first visit into the Selby half after all this pressure resulted in an unconverted try. Selby's forwards scrum and rucking stayed strong and the backs slick passing kept the pressure on Yarnbury but at half time the score was 8-0.

After words of wisdom from the coaches, the Selby boys came out all guns blazing but conceded a converted try 5 mins into the second half. Not to be downhearted Selby kept putting pressure on the Yarnbury try line but to no avail. As Selby's fitness started to take its toll with missed tackles, handling errors and Yarnbury dominating the rucks, they scored three converted tries in the space of 5 minutes. At this point if it was a boxing match the referee may have stopped it.

The Selby boys weren't prepared to stay down and were rewarded with a try from Finn. Two more converted tries for Yarnbury and two tries judged to be knocked on and just short for Selby by the man in the middle saw the full time score finish 46-5.

The Selby boys looked as though they'd lost a tenner and found a quid but should hold their heads high for the first half performance and the never give up attitude in the second half. Man of the match went to the tenacious Finn.
