A battle in the conditions

Upon arrival at Old Brods it was clear that the day’s match was going to be an extremely tough one. After assembling in the changing rooms Selby made their way out to the training pitch. The lads ran through both the backs and forwards moves for the day. This lead to an amusing situation involving Mark Joyce, Josh Masham and a tackle bag. With the warm-ups and referee’s briefing complete Selby made their way down to the main pitch ready for the inevitable confrontation.

Selby played the first half down the considerable slope and with the teams back to the wind. The weather was foul and lead to a narrow game and a few costly handling errors. Selby were sadly not able to make the best of the favourable conditions through the start of the first half. Old Brods nicked a try against the grain of play to compound these errors.

There was however a period of very promising play in the latter part of this half. The ‘pick and go’ proved to be very effective and Selby worked their way up to the Old Brods ten metre line. With the pressure mounting Brods conceded a ruck penalty and with the last play of the first half Selby ran the ball towards the try line and were unfortunate to concede a penalty of their own.
