Selby Take Control

After a slow start to the season Selby could have been forgiven if they approached this game in a tentative fashion. However Selby took control of the game from the word go and demonstrated their dominance over a gutsy Ripon side.

The game started well for Selby with a try in the corner from Janus after a strong run breaking several tackles. This was followed by a period of play where Ripon matched Selby before Kealy scored after a tenacious run.

Not to be deterred, Ripon still kept up the pressure on Selby and scored their first try of the game in the corner to make it 10-5. However immediately from the restart Janus carried the ball in a powerful run the length of the Ripon half to score, converted by Kealey.

Ripon then replied to make the score 17-12.

The second half saw Selby withstand a lot of Ripon pressure, being camped in their own 22 for long periods of time having to defend their line doggedly, before a marvellous breakaway try swung the game in Selby’s favour with the fleet footed Sibley and Nycek combining with good hands to set up the excellent Janus for his hat-trick, converted by Cockeram.

The next passage of play saw Selby dominate with some great running and a couple of well executed tries from Cresham after a cheeky but skillfull offload from Sibley, again converted by Cockeram, then finally a diving try in the corner by winger Fairfield. Final score 36-12.

Despite the hat trick of tries from Janus, the player of the match went to Bugg who was called upon to play three different positions during the match and performed each outstandingly.
