Scunthorpe was the location for the U15’s latest game and fortunately the hardest part of the day proved to be finding the venue!

Selby were healthy again in numbers and were able to field a strong side, and for most of the first half had possession and territory with Kieron, Harry and Ryan leading the charges and counter rucking when required.

Despite the dominance from the start Selby were thwarted 5 times as multiple times they came within touching distance, and twice over the Scunthorpe try line, only for a knock on and forced pass going to ground keeping the scores level.

After 20 minutes the pressure finally told and a move with flowing forward phases allowed the backs some space and Michal was able to take advantage of an overlap and touch down in the corner for the only score of the half.

More pressure came and went on the Scunthorpe line but the rush to score resulted in further instances of scrappy play and dropped ball and at half time the score remained 5-0.

The second half started the same as the first, only for a rare lapse in the Selby defence on 37 minutes allowed the hosts field position and territory. After a couple of minutes of pressure and well worked move from a scrum, the home team scored under the posts and when the conversion went over Scunthorpe led 7-5.

This was against the run of play and the boys lifted quickly to continue with the forward domination, Alex S with strong direct run and powerful scums and rucks saw Selby push forward. On 47 minutes captain Lawrence took possession of the ball and forced his way over from 10 metres to score and Selby had regained the lead 10-7.

The remainder of the match was more a question of whether Selby could add to their lead and it took until the last play for that to be answered positively.

Similar to the first try, forwards did the hard work, and from the half way line the backs took over, running straight and passing down the line until Dan J flew down the wing, evading 3 tackles, and when he made it over the try line was able to touch down under the posts for Charlie A to add the conversion with the last kick of the match to make the final score 17-7.

A dominant performance by the lads today, a little more composure when close to the opponents try line could and maybe should have resulted in a bigger margin of victory, however on the whole a satisfying outing.

Cup week next week where we carry on the quest of silverware for the Selby u15’s, look out the rest of Yorkshire!
