Selby’s youngsters show rivals their heels.
The mini festival for under 9 age grade teams was held at York this Sunday. Selby, with four teams in their squad, were to be pitted against Harrogate, Ripon, Wetherby and Richmondshire along with the host.
The weather played a part as when the festival began the heavens opened. The character of the young players was stronger than a bit of rain and cold, which was shrugged off when games started.
Each team, from Selby’s formidable squad, played three games against unknown opposition, with the exception of York who gave Selby a stern test a fortnight earlier. The first games began with flair and running, but as the festival was coming to an end it was more about grit, determination and good teamwork. Selby had shown the lead in all four groups with three teams winning against two other sides and one team winning all three. The victory was sweet indeed in York’s back yard.
Stand out performances from Isaac Linford, Elliott Turton, Zac Kierans, Harry Roffe, Connor Dale and Will Bayston. The teamwork shone today and was the basis of Selby’s resounding victories.
