This was Selby under 9's first tackling fixture of the 2016 season. Previously at under 7 & under 8 the children play tag rugby. The test could not have been sterner as we were up against arch-rivals, York. In previous seasons York have offered several different standards of player, but they were out in force this time.
Selby were not in the mood to wilt in the heat of a beautiful early October day. From the first whistle York looked for a battle royal, Selby stood firm, scored freely and frustrated York to boot.
These days scoring is informal with the emphasis of the fixture being on enjoyment and inclusion for all. Parent and child, however, judge the balance of performance. The day was honours equal, but a great first outing for Selby’s under 9 squad.
Stand out performances from Ben Cockeram, Freya Clayton, Benjamin Tosney, Tyler Higgins, Joe Bugg and William Tehan. This was not, though, a day about individuals it was a fabulous team effort.
