Selby’s thirds emulated the deeds of their illustrious first fifteen by running a hatful of points through Castleford’s second string. The Cas line up was a mix of teak strong forwards and mobile young backs however the majority of their play went straight up the middle of the park.

The Swans fielded their own melange of brisk maturity and youthful endeavour and were found to have the better blend as they took the match by the short and curlies and gave it a good shaking

Converted tries were exchanged early on, Aiden Pearce crossing and Leigh Adamson converting for Selby with Cas bouncing straight back to level.

The two sides hustled and tussled about the slick cold pitch, play frequently punctuated with restarts as numb fingers groped after that slippery pill.

Further tries were exchanged as Ben Spence crossed for Selby & Cas again restored the status quo. The Swans then delivered a stunning double right before the half time whistle with Pearce following up his own kick to dot down and as Selby ground back upfield from the kick-off Simon Lee pounced on the short side to make it 22-12 at the break

The Swans scored right from the restart, Jason Goodwin showing a clean pair of heels to rip through the Cas defence, Adamson chipping the extras. Adamson was again on hand to tidy things up ten minutes later as John Taylor justified his introduction into proceedings with a well taken score. Pierce rounded things off nicely with his third before Cas were awarded a dubious late try shortly before the final whistle.

All in all a good solid performance from the Swans with notable contributions from Blaymire, Case and the Venables brothers
