Selby travelled to South Yorkshire with a make shift team after losing some key players early in the morning. The team battled hard for most of the game and the score doesn’t do them justice. Selby went behind early on in the game with a try from the speedy Wath winger and conceded another almost immediately. The swans then rallied for the last 20 minutes of the half with some good forward play which earned them a penalty in front of the sticks for their efforts. Church duly converting. Selby then began to assert more pressure and it seemed like they where going to be a surprise victory until the half time whistle blew. Selby came back out from half time with high hopes but they where quickly dashed when Wath scored three tries in rapid succession straight from kick off. This was not the end of the contest though as Selby’s never say die attitude took over as they played some good rugby which resulted in captain Godfrey scoring a try in the corner with the grace of a ballerina with broken ankles just on the final whistle. Selby can take heart from the displays from the players called up from the lower teams with Knowles and Pemberton playing well along side the reliable old men of Phillips and Parsonage. With a full team Selby can match anybody in their league.
