Strong Hambrecht display in super thirds victory

Selby RUFC 3rd Team 24
Driffield RUFC 3rd Team 7

Writes James D’Lion

Selby started this game in confident mood keen to add to their winning run, and scored with in a couple of minutes of kick off courtesy of a slice of luck from Bacon who carried the ball over the line from a trademark catch and drive from his forwards. The referee then trod on his own glasses much to the amusement of the players, but the Swans didn’t see the funny side when he then missed the most blatant of knock ons to allow Driffield to take the lead with a converted try, then immediately from the kick off a high early tackle on Andrew Wass, who didn’t know where he was.

But the Swans where in no mood to concede defeat and started playing some excellent rugby. This was emphasised by the enigmatic Wass who barged his way over the try line. Then a beautifully taken solo try by Firth saw him dash a good 60 yards. The half time came with the score 17 – 7 to Selby.
The second half which promised to see more tries from the rampaging Selby side didn’t happen with the referee losing control of the game which became scrappy with poor decisions and his inability to keep up with the action frustrating both teams. There was a case of knowing me knowing you as Wass combined brilliantly with Parsonage to put the latter under the posts to touch down for the final score. Selby performed excellently given the conditions with Hambrecht working hard in the multitude of scrumages and Phillips tackling well in defence.
