Selby 10- York 10

"Lambies lambs" were at home to old rivals York last Saturday, As with all local derby's the stakes were high, York who were riding high on the back of 5 wins and placed top of the league table can up against a strong and improving side Selby side writes Paul Gabel.

Having done the pleasantries with the same referee for 3 out of 5 matches this season, the battle commenced. Selby started with a flying start following on from last weeks abandoned match against Barnsley, Indeed with forwards leading from the front and in particular Bourke having good ball skills and pace to bully his way through the York defence resulting with 2 tries that were disallowed by the referee because of infringements before Bourke got the ball.

The game went back and forth, both side camping out in each others "22" but both sides coming away with no points. This was down to both sides putting their bodies on the line to keep the other from crossing the line. A true credit to what local derby's are made of with attacking and defending with passion.

The game was such a stale mate that it took almost twenty minutes into the second half before a score went on the board, Selby were able to play good patterns of play and create the overlap out wide for Firth to go over with a well deserved try.

Selby and York started again with the same vigour and "left breast" determination but again Selby were able to keep possession and work their way back up the field, once again playing to the game plan which resulted in a try by Townend.

Credit must be given to York for keeping their cool and with a lucky try got themselves back in the game with five minutes to go and when the referee indicated the last play Selby let their guard down, giving York a last chance attempt and scored with an unconverted try. This made the game a draw. A result that was fitting for the game that was played by both sides. York can still keep there unbeaten record but only just. Selby can look forward to improving week on week as they have so far.

We would like to welcome veteran rugby star Shaun Austerfield who has agreed to be apart of our 2nd team set up, he will bring his knowledge and vast experience to our developing side.
