South Sea Soldiers slow Selby surge to title.

RIPON A 28 SELBY A 13

Selby’s successful second string were unfortunate on Saturday to come up against an extremely strong & well organised Ripon A team, coached by ex Selby player Andy Huetson and bolstered with the inclusion of several Fijians from the nearby Army base. The visitors, however were hampered by the fact that half the squad had played in the Pocklington Sevens competition the day before. The soldiers though were fired up and fit with this being their final game before travelling out to Afghanistan, and all from Selby wish them well.
Pressure was mounted on the Selby line from the kick off and following several charges at the line, centre Greenwood forced over and this score was followed up with a penalty from off half Lingman.
Selby were finding it difficult to get into the game, but full back Nick Firth was taken out of the game completely with an illegal tackle by South Sea Islander full back Iantu Latue for which he received only a yellow, but as he returned home flanker, Walker went permanently for punching.
This allowed Selby into the game and off half Jordan Barton reduced the arrears with a penalty, and the half closed at 11-3.

The Swans started the second half a little better and from a heel against the head, No 8 Matty Wood picked up, linked with scrum half Ed Clarke, then took the return pass to go in under the posts and for Barton to convert.
The Hornblower’s response was swift & decisive as from a break started by impressive No 6 Wantatabe Ina’ Virsteme and carried on across the backs, speedy winger Boston flew in for an excellent score converted by Lingman.
Selby continued to compete and a good long penalty converted by Barton eased them back into the game, but even playing a man short Ripon were far too strong for their visitors and ran in two further converted tries.
This was indeed a very strong & motivated Ripon team, against which even a fully fit and fresh Selby team would have struggled, and they fully deserved their victory.
