Selby run out of steam

Pocklington A 32 V Selby A 0 – Eastern Championship Merit league Saturday 7th September
Selby made the trip to Pocklington with a much changed side to the one selected and with Prop Tunningley proving a no show they had to shuffle things again before kick-off. This meant back row Sam Broughton on his first game back from a year out injured trying his hand at Prop with old man Copperwheat on the other side and young Adam Roberts now old enough to play front row starting at hooker.
Selby struggled for possession during the first half as Pocklington's larger and taller pack created problems both in scrum and line-out. Playing uphill their defence was impressive with young colt Paddy Rowntree to the fore making tackles all over the field and carrying strongly. The half back pairing worked well with Jack Daniels and Jordan Barton both impressing throughout the game.
Pocklington eventually created space wide out to put a man down the wing, a good tackle looked to have held him up over the line but the referee gave the try from 30yards away unsighted of the ball.
Selby turned around 5-0 down with the slope and with plenty of intention of turning things around, Phillips replaced Roberts at hooker and Kaye came on with Broughton moving to back row. With an average age of 50 in the front row the experience showed and Selby started to win possession in both lineouts and scrums including some of the opposition’s ball. This enabled the pacey backs to create opportunities but Pocklington’s defence proved strong and all attacks were thwarted.
Pocklington worked another two tries, one converted in the first twenty minutes of the second half as Selby slowly tired. With ten minutes to the final whistle Selby’s scrum half Daniels was sin binned for obstruction and Pock used their extra man to run in three further tries as Selby ran out of steam.
There were positives to take out of the game and a few training sessions together will create a far more competitive and fitter squad
