Seconds tame limp Leos

Leodensians A 7 Selby A 22

Selby travelled to North Leeds and were fortunate to find a pitch to play on, as the first pitch offered was bone hard and unplayable but the remaining pitch, although on a vertiginous slant was soft enough to take a stud, and so the match went ahead.
The Swan’s seconds included two former first team fixtures, with centre Shaun Austerfield making a welcome return to the game after 18months of rehabilitation following knee reconstruction, and Martin Protheroe returning from the outer spaces of Upper Wharfedale. Whilst prop Tom Bell sportingly agreed to add his considerable weight to the home front row.
Selby started with a bang with big runner Mark Rollinson making his mark, well supported by the Bens- Booth and Aked, but the attack was not rewarded and eventually some limp defence allowed a Leo’s breakout.
Then a good turnover by the back row saw quicksilver scrum half Simon Tomlinson streak away to feed the supporting Aked at full gallop in support to touch down wide out.
Leos roared back and quick hands saw their winger Lenny Lyons pad in under the posts with Taymer converting.
Selby looked dangerous in patches, but players were guilty of taking the ball on too far, being unaware of support and taking the ball into contact instead of letting the ball do the work, until, at last a good passing movement saw Austerfield cross for an excellent score.
This was followed a couple of minutes later with an individual Austerfield effort to leave the score at 7- 15 at half time, in a game which should have seen the home side dead and buried.

The second half was a largely scrappy affair enlightened with good running by Rollinson, Aked Lamb and Booth and with hooker, the boisterous “ Blaze “ Blaymire making his presence felt all over the field.
The addition of Andy Banks in the centre brought some structure into the game, but the potential menace of big wingers Protheroe & Lamb was never tested as lack of awareness of space around them by too many players meant that the ball rarely made it out to the wings.
Eventually a rollicking Rollinson roll was well supported by Tomlinson, who scampered in under the posts to give Booth the only conversion of the game.
With the light fading and the pitch freezing, the referee brought the proceedings to a close, with a predictable and comfortable victory, which was never remotely threatened by a limited Leos lineup.
