Seagulls sunk on Rock

SELBY A 18 SCARBOROUGH 2NDS 0

Fielding a potent mixture of youth and experience, Selby Seconds are melding into a formidable team under the shrewd stewardship of elder statesman and skipper Duncan Phillips.
There are a number of the youngsters in the team knocking hard on the selectors door for recognition, with prop Mark Tanner, off half Jordan Barton and wing Ollie Saunders already with a couple of first team games under their belt, but with both ubiquitous hooker James Blaymire, all bustle & aggression all over the field and No 8 Ben Booth at last playing to his potential and improving weekly, yet to be given the opportunity which will surely come soon.
Scrum half Richard Gibbons also caught the eye with a couple of opportunistic scores, and with work on his pass, he too could be up there inside a couple of seasons, and if big second row Anthony Wass really decided to get fit he could be a first team fixture for years to come.
Of the senior players Mark Rollinson had a couple of storming runs and is very much in form, and prop Paul Gable must wonder why his first team career appears to be over so prematurely.
This is of course, picking out individuals in a first class team performance in which the home side were forced to defend during the early stages, and it was testament to their defence that Scarboro remained scoreless throughout. Selby weathered the initial surge and took play deep into the opposition half, and Phillips claimed the score at the end of a good forward drive.
A feature of the half was some big forward runs with Gable, Wass and Rollinson to the fore & Kev Lamb always a handful on the wing.
Selby rang the changes at half time to give all of the squad a game, and soon after kick off Gibbo claimed his first score finishing off a good build up and soon after claimed a score for his forwards, as from a good shunt from a 5m scrum, he harried his opposite number & pinched the ball.
The game see-sawed with Selby always having the bulk of possession and territory and midway through the half Booth underlined his versatility with a penalty to conclude the scoring.
