David Everatt Reports

Selby welcomed near neighbours, Goole, on Saturday, aiming to extract revenge for defeat at Westfield Banks earlier this season in the league. A large crowd, on a cold but sunny afternoon, for a Yorkshire Cup second round tie.

Within three minutes things looked ominous for the home side as Goole secured a penalty in front of the posts for offside which was converted by Goole’s stand-off. Selby needed a response, and the first of many scrum penalties awarded to Selby during the game, was kicked to the corner where a clean take and couple of drives saw Jamie Dentith driven over for a try, converted by Oli Parsonage for 7-3 lead.

The contest remained tight with a penalty kick by Goole going wide till a further penalty was converted as Selby failed to roll away and Ben Hodder was harshly sin binned for 10 minutes. The fourteen of Selby conceded no points in the ten minutes, with Captain Jack Hebden and Max Wotton to the fore driving the ball at their Goole counterparts. Goole for their part through strong running from centre Sam Smith. A penalty conceded by Selby from one such run saw a kick to the corner and a clean take see Rhys Moore nip in for a try that was converted from under the posts. A further blow saw a second try shortly after by Louis Sugden, again converted, to see a half time score of 20-7 to Goole.

Half time saw Jack Todd replace Dentith in the front row to the delight of match day sponsors and his employers TNG Builders and with props Wotton and Reid, Selby had a concerted spell of good scrummage ball. Unfortunately Goole’s razor sharp back row often won turnovers to relieve pressure on their try line. A penalty saw Goole’s lead out to 23-7 and possibly still a way back into the game for Selby. But unusually for a Selby side, tiredness and lack of cohesion saw Goole score two converted tries in the last 5 minutes to leave the score a flattering 42-7 to Goole.

A hard day at the office for a young and inexperienced team showing much potential. A front row who all put in excellent performances saw Joey Reid awarded man of the match. Oli Parsonage looked sharp at 9 and Ben Poskitt acquitted himself at stand-off in preparation for next week. The league leaders looking to get back to winning ways at home against new opposition Glossop.
