Selby welcomed Goole to Sandhill Lane for the third derby of the season looking to right the wrongs of two previous defeats.
Sam Broughton started in the pack for the absent Liam Hogan and Charlie Bramley started at 15 after his Man of the Match award for the 2nds last week. Also returning to the home fixture James ‘Bob’ Robinson on the wing after his hat-trick in the same game last week.
Selby went behind early in to the game as Reece Moore kicked a penalty from in front of the posts as Selby went in at the side. Most of the farmers, who were having their annual function, missing the opening as they finished off Hicky’s rhubarb crumble.
Selby’s forwards then took the game to Goole from the kick off and a penalty was given on half way was wasted as the kick to the corner went dead. Goole dropped out and when Selby didn’t roll away Moore kicked a long range penalty to make it 6-0 after 7 minutes.
Things went from bad to worse on the restart as Goole regained possession and from 5 yards out scrum half Moore threw an outrageous dummy and went through untouched, slightly to the left hand post - surprisingly missing the conversion.
The returning Ben Lodge came on for Jack Hebden and the Swans thought they had scored but Bob Robinson conceded a penalty for double movement and Goole cleared their line. Selby’s forwards were providing plenty of ball and from a scrum in just in their own half Charlie Bramley broke clear to go in the left hand corner delighting his sponsors Peacock & Binnington. The conversion was missed but Selby had their tails up. A serious looking injury saw Joe Ramsay stretchered off to be replaced by the second returning Lodge, Matt and within minutes he was on the scoresheet as another 40 metre break by Charlie Bramley saw him finish off near the posts for Henry Wright to convert giving Selby a 12-11 half time lead.
A long range penalty was short on distance and Selby then drove hard through Ben Lodge and Max Wotton till Broughton was held up over the line. Selby then knocked on with the line at their mercy and Goole gratefully recovered from a back peddling scum to kick clear. Goole centres Roberts and Smith were punching holes in the Selby defence and it was taking two to three tacklers to bring them down till Smith found a gap to go in the right hand corner to enable Goole to take a 16-11 lead on sixty minutes.
The game was dealt the decisive moment only four minutes later as Goole secured quick turnover ball and scored a converted try to open up a nine point lead.
Selby came back and with twelve minutes to go as Wright kicked a long range penalty as Goole stand-off Tom Holt was shown yellow for a high tackle leaving the game in the balance. With a man advantage the Swans were on the up but the Goole pack defended manfully and the effort was wasted as the Selby line out miss fired and the ball went long over the top four times as Selby played in the Goole half but rarely got into the 22 as the match fizzled out.
Selby stay top as Rochdale surprisingly lost at Scarborough. Old Brodleians winning to gain ground on the top two.
Selby travel to Rochdale looking to avenge their defeat earlier in the season on February 17th.
Elsewhere the seconds and thirds both beat Goole as the seconds triumphed 26-22 at Westfield Banks. The thirds winning 33-32 at Sandhill lane in a one o’clock kick off to enable both sides to watch the firsts.
