Area Six Festival

Sunday 5th March saw the annual Area Six Festival, held at Darlington RFC. The format this year was two pools of four teams with the top two from each then going through to play each other.

Selby Pens Girls U13s were drawn against three strong teams in their pool; Morley, Sandal and Tynedale.

Their first match was against Morley, who Selby played for the first time last week at Castleford. The rematch at Darlington was a very physical match with players on both sides putting their bodies on the line for their teams. It was a tough game with Selby eventually winning with 10 points to 5.

The second game against Sandal saw Selby score three excellent tries on their way to a 15 nil win.

The final pool game saw Selby come up up against a new opponent, Tynedale. Tynedale are a well coached and talented side that pushed the Pens throughout the duration of the match. Following an early score from Tynedale, Selby dug deep to pull back an equalising try. The remainder of the match went back and forth with Selby outstanding in defence, holding up two potential tries over the line. The final score was a 5 - 5 draw.

Despite having played a very tough and physically demanding 45 minutes of rugby and topping their pool, the Pens then went on to play Morpeth, the winners of the second pool. This was another physical encounter against an unknown team. Selby took control with two early tries and then absorbed considerable pressure, until the the very final play of the match where Morpeth created a lovely try as the final whistle blew. The final score was Selby 10, Morpeth 5.

Following an incredible day's rugby from our under 13s, the girls were rewarded even further with the high accolade of the RFU fair play award. This was awarded to them in recognition of their excellent sportsmanship, respect to their opponents and humility in victory throughout the day.
