25th September 2016

So last Sunday was the first match of the season for the under 13's girls, and what a great day. The team travelled to Malton, with an abundance of parents in support. It was a fabulous sunny September day, the club is great and the club representatives welcoming, a great friendly atmosphere.

The under 13's were playing down on the bottom pitch while the under 15's were performing on the first pitch for a Cup match. Malton have lost a lot of their U13's this year so teamed up with Scarborough to form their side.

As you are aware there has been a big shake up in youth rugby for this season, and the girls have had to get ready for playing up to 12 a side, 5 in a scrum, kicks to restart and a bigger pitch. We can report that the girls took these changes in their stride and romped home to a 22:0 win.

Ella lead the team to victory as Captain and leading by example running home with 2 tries. Sophie had a fantastic game and scored a staggering 5 tries. As a whole there were some great plays, fantastic passing and with some good controlled aggression, performed some of the best tackles we have seen from the girls since the creation of their team 2 years ago.

During the course of the game, tries were scored by 9 of the 11 girls playing, and this included two of the girls playing in their debut game, Leah and Abi, a fantastic start to their new life in rugby. Malton / Scarborough never gave up and nearly made the line on a couple of occasions, but their pushes were few and far between, and were kept at bay by the superb defence played by the Selby girls. Most of the match was played within Maltons own half, with the Selby girls holding the most possession of the ball.

On the whole the team played a great game. There was a few errors, and a few injuries, keeping the first aider busy. However, after a some tears, all the girls pulled it together, rubbed their bruises and soldiered on to help with their first victory of the season, with, I am sure, many more to come.
