It was an unusually early start on Sunday morning for the U13 girls’ game over near Halifax. The girls will have fond memories of this ground having played here during the Old Brodlians festival at the end of last season. This is where they had the opportunity to meet England Captain Sarah Hunter and where they also won the RFU award for Core Values.
The girls received a warm welcome again and with only three girls available to play from Newark, Old Brods and Newark joined together to play the Selby Pens. They played three stints in the pouring rain, with Old Brods/Newark quickly scoring the first try. Selby girls played well together, with Ella as Captain and Sophie as Vice-Captain. Under the watchful eye of Ash, they moved the ball around well, there was good communication and a number of fierce tackles. This hard work paid off and the Pens went on to score nine consecutive tries, not allowing the Old Brods/Newark girls to add any more points to their score.
Despite the horrible weather and the dominance of Selby, the Old Brods/Newark girls never gave up and continued to push, almost scoring again on a number of occasions. The game was played with determination and grit, but it was good to see the fair play and spirit of friendship from both sides, reflected in the mud sliding and group team photo taken at the end.
Selby Pens U13 should be very proud of their win.
