Surely Selby's biggest day in the mini rugby fixture calendar for under 10s, Selby Festival 2018.

A mixed day weather wise, Selby fielded 3 teams, white, green and gold against a number of teams from regional rivals, Pocklington, Harrogate, Roundhegians, Doncaster, Sheffield and Scunthorpe.

The 3 teams played five games each and over the total fifteen games they showed very strong performances against some equally powerful teams and for once (of recent months) the youngsters were somewhat stretched, usually fielding two teams. However, they battled on, and through the wind, rain and brilliant sunshine, made some good running and defensive play, passing and communicating with each other with ease.

Of the 15 matches they were primarily triumphant, but they did lose and draw one or two games.

Outstanding performances go to Luke Fairfield, Reggie Joyce and Kieran Oades (Selby Gold). Will Bayston and Benjamin Tosney (Selby Green) the latter notching up an amazing haul of 40 tries this season. Will Tehan, who was involved in almost every tackle and assist throughout the day, Freya Clayton who gave everything and only injury could stop her, and Jack Storey who gave a single flying tackle to deny Doncaster from preventing a Selby win (Selby White).

So a magnificent finale to the 2017-2018 season. A fine tribute to the seemingly selfless coaching and management staff, without whom none of this would be possible.

Under the leadership of Steve Tosney this group of players and volunteers have excelled this year. On tour last weekend, the players showed the maturity of much older boys and girls and they showed themselves to be great ambassadors of Selby R U F C. They also were undefeated having only drawn twice against two of the strongest youth clubs in the northeast region - Percy Park and Northern - having won all the other games they played.

Next season can't come quickly enough!
