So Close............

Selby U13s travelled to Leeds for the 3rd time this year, this time to play West Park Leeds. With a gale blowing across the pitch West Park kicked-off and for the first 5 minutes possession passed backwards and forwards between the two teams, but with West Park slowly making ground towards the Selby line. Just as it looked as if the home team would be the first to score Ollie Uren lofted the ball downfield to relieve the pressure. Shortly afterwards Selby won clean ball from the scrum, passing out to Sam Perrin who sprinted down the left wing to score under the posts. West Park restarted and were soon applying pressure – spirited tackling from Hedley Benn-Harris, Sam Perrin, Alex Whitehead, Archie Bennett and Joseph Styrin kept them at bay but before long, with Selby’s defensive line pulled out of shape by their opponent’s quick ball, the Leeds team notched up their first try. With half-time approaching West Park re-started, Bennett received the ball and passed out to Uren who left the defence in his wake, touching down under the posts.
Early in the second half Selby started to show signs of tiring; handling errors and missed tackles allowing West Park to score their second and third tries in few minutes after the re-start. The Cygnets rallied, winning a turnover from a ruck deep in their own half, the ball moving out to Uren to score the try and make his 3rd conversion – no mean feat in the strong wind. With the physicality of the game and the difficult conditions taking their toll on the away team West Park broke through the Selby defence twice more, scoring on both occasions. As the game neared its end, and with only 4 points separating the teams Selby rallied and again pushed deep into the West Park half but the promising attack ended with a break-down and the final whistle. Despite the defeat this was a strong performance from an ever-improving Selby team.
