Selby’s first game of the year saw them travel to Moortown’s Far Moss ground for a delayed Yorkshire Bowl tie. Selby started well, showing little signs of rustiness despite the 4 week lay-off since their last game. Early pressure was soon rewarded with an Ollie Uren try following a Selby turned-over ruck and clean passing amongst the backs. A second try for the Cygnets came from a much-improved line-out, Joseph Styrin, who continues to impress, charging into the Moortown defence and off-loaded to Uren who in turn passed to Sam Perrin who dashed down his left wing to score. A few minutes later Uren added a third following some solid Selby rucking. Just before half-time Charlie Bramley, with the Moortown defence in pursuit, dribbled the ball almost the full length of the pitch but couldn’t quite get it touched down.
Selby continued strongly in the early part of the second half with Luke Fisher scoring a well-deserved try from a period of strong, confident scrummaging, dominance in the rucks and assured handling and passing. As the game approached its last 15 minutes the away team’s concentration dropped and Moortown took their opportunities, scoring two tries before Uren took his hat-trick, and his 5th conversion to seal the game. This was a confident and assured team performance from Selby. Rucking and handling has much improved although, with some notable exceptions (Perrin, Bramley, Styrin, Uren), there is still work to do in the tackles. The Selby tight five – Parker, Burdekin, Whitehead, Hayden and Styrin deserve mention for their consistent dominance in the scrum over several games.
