Selby opened their 2018-2019 season at the picturesque Mallorie Park against Ripon.
On a dry, bright morning Selby fielded 2 teams with substitutes.
New skills which have been introduced for this age group are, kicking and contest by hookers in the scrum. After 4 weeks of fairly intensive training Selby were keen to implement these new abilities into actual match-play.
They did this with much success. Team A, captained by Connor Dale, won both matches against two powerful Ripon sides of similar ability. Lead by an impressive performance by their captain, who artfully mastered the kicks, William Bayston shone as he notched up the tries, helped by his team mate's coordinated passing skills. Ollie Love also had an outstanding morning bravely tackling with skill and strength. Newcomer Leon Partington had an impressive debut, fitting in well with the team and scoring his first Selby try.
Team B also had a good morning. Winning both games, Luke Fairfield showed dogged persistence and determination throughout both matches, keeping the team focused. Harry Keeley was in support with some fine running but man of the match was Toby Taperell, who played with accuracy and finesse all morning.
A great start to the season and an enjoyable and entertaining morning of junior rugby.
