Lauren Barker Reports

Selby Ladies got their 2021-22 season off to the best possible start as they defeated the Grimsby Lynx’s in an away match, 40 points to 20 last weekend.

It was a shaky start for the newly formed Selby team with Grimsby taking 2 tries within minutes of the start. There followed a nervous period as both sides probed for an opening and the speed of the game quickly ramped up.

At half time, a speedy shift in tactics from coach, Will Stoker, saw Selby lay on the pressure and come back with a vengeance. Captain, Honor Ratcliffe, scooped up a loose ball to pass on to Lauren Barker, who dived in to score Selby’s first try of the match. One led to another, with Ellie Green throwing a long pass out to Sadie Hunt, who charged through a gap to score the second and equalise with the opposition.

By that point, a positive momentum had very much shifted in Selby’s favour. They were playing better as a team and were sharper, digesting balls much faster. An exciting play down the left wing saw an astonishing pass from Sadie over the top of the Grimsby players, into the safe hands of Georgia Smith, who powered down the line to score her first try of the game.

Georgia was on a roll, and a few minutes later after taking a short sharp pass from Tamara Benjamin, came her second try. Sadie then scooped another for herself which brought the score to 20-10.

Grimsby, however, were not about to let the game go. With gritted teeth, they fought their way back into the game and the next two tries were deservedly theirs. Yet, Selby pushed hard in the last 15 minutes and as Tanya Whitby flew over the try line for her first try, their very first win was at their fingertips.

With tired legs and the defence widening, Selby had the final say minutes from the end with Lauren Barker powering down the right wing for her hat-trick.

It was a fantastic start for Selby in windy conditions and their determination was thoroughly rewarded. Man of the match went justly to Tamara Benjamin for her relentless support in the game.

Grimsby were worthy opponents and Selby very much look forward to the re-match at home against the Grimsby Lynx’s which takes place on Sunday 5th December.
