Selby 3's 17 Nestle 1st 38

In a game predicted to be a "proper battle" the 2 sides that took to the field provided a great advert for local Rugby scoring some superb tries and some excellent defence as both teams went at it for 80 Minutes!!

Nestle who brought a full squad of 22 Players (and used everyone of them) led from off as the Selby defence spread out wide on one side and found themselves caught out on the blind side as the energetic 6 ran almost 50 meters unchallenged to score under the posts. Not the start Selby wanted!

Selby bolstered by some returning players got back into the game after 10 Minutes due in part to Tom, who smashed the Nestle player backwards, and Christian Townend who collected the loose ball and presented it with the class of a pro. Ben Rawson found himself dragged into the ruck but cheekily threw a pass threw his legs to Dan White who set Patrick Rowntree free for a great Selby riposte. Leigh Adamson missing with the kick by the width of a blade of grass.

From the kick off Selby had a good run back into the Nestle half and a sustained amount of pressure saw them almost score a second as Chris Rawlins and Jack Rich nearly worked through the smallest gap but good covering defence scuppered any chance of a score. Nestle then kicked into gear as a well worked move saw their superb centre coast through a gap and offload for their second score. The pattern for the rest of the second half seemed the same, Selby's dominant pack led by Townend and North securing a great platform to work from and Selby's backs not being able to penetrate the very hardworking backs from Nestle. Nestle added a further 3 tries in the first half and it looked like they might go on and really crush the Selby 3rd team in the second half.

A few brave choices from Chris Rawlins during the half time break seemed to pay dividends in the second half as Selby yet again dominant in the pack secured lots of quality ball but with Oliver Saunders and Sam Toolan introduced to the backs, their seemed to be a more clinical edge. Ben Rawson controlling the forwards well as they drove to the Nestle line early in the half thought he had scored but as he broke free taking the ref with him the ref decided to bring the play back 5 meters citing that "because he couldn't get out of the way" he couldn't award the try as Selby had gained an advantage even though it was a clear run to the line. Selby responded well to this as Oliver Saunders made a few efforts for the line before finally scoring a well worked Selby try with Adamson notching the kick for his only success of the day.

Nestle then began to ring the changes and ex Selby 1st team Scrum half Jack Daniels started to have quite an influence in the game as he moved the ball away from the Forwards seeing that Selby had the edge. one of the numerous quick balls led to the try of the game as a quite brilliant offload from the Nestle centre saw a clear run on the line for the winger. Nestle made further changes as did Selby with Jason Goodwin coming back on and Ian Copperwheat coming back into the front row much to the dismay of the Nestle front row. Daniel White had the last laugh for Selby and it seemed fitting given the fact they had out played Nestle in the second half. A kick through from Mike Parsonage was chased down by the winger who made a mistake only for White to kick through and score a deserved try.

All in all it was a great game and the 50-60 supporters that walked all the way over from the clubhouse enjoyed the game and stayed to clap each and every player off the field.

Man of the match went to Christian Townend but Captain Chris Rawlins wanted to make it known that he was proud of every player and said the collective shared his award!

Thanks also to Ray Adamson for controlling the line and avid Nestle fans!

Only Harrogate next!!
