First win for the 3rds

A hastily rearranged fixture due to the Yorkshire Trophy game being conceded by Guisborough saw a strong Wetherby 2nd team bolstered by some returning first team players make the short journey to Sandhill lane. Both teams served up an interesting mix of great play and some sloppy early season handling and defensive problems.

Wetherby got the game going and hit their straps nice and early with the obvious tactic of recycling quick ball and utilising their strong running centre Liam Hogan and their lighting quick full back who put pressure on the Selby back line straight from the off. Some great work from the forwards combined with the backs stopped them scoring an early try and eventually after knocking on the Selby door they opted for a penalty which was dotted over. Wetherby with their tails up scored 2 quick tries soon after as a combination of missed tackles in the middle of the park and a handling error cost Selby dear. Having started well, the forwards then took matters into their own hands as a series of lineouts gained much ground and with Leigh Adamson finding some form from the kicking tee Selby finally had points on the board. Straight from kick off Charlie Booth forced a knock on which eventually led to a penalty from which Adamson found a great touch kick for the forwards to work with. Paul North throwing in and then finding himself at the back of a driving maul which barrelled over the whitewash for a trademark Selby 3rd team score. Adamson once again converting.

Selby captain Chris Rawlins was pleased with the effort but pleaded for more passion when defending and more conviction whilst attacking and that's exactly what Selby gave him in the second half. Some changes were made and Selby looked a stronger outfit and in truth the lads seemed to want it more. Ben Rawson moved to 9 and Christian Townend slotted in at 7 whilst Aidan Pearce came in at 15 with Rawlins moving himself to the wing.

From the kick off Selby camped on the Wetherby 22 and eventually quick ball from the break down saw Andrew Wass scorch over for a converted try. Wetherby seemed to have no answer to the Selby forwards who paved the way for the backs to make great in roads and Jason Goodwin and Mike Parsonage seemed to click as a centre pairing with Adamson pulling the strings. Wetherby defended for their lives with some hard hitting tackling but eventually the sheer number of defenders they had to pull in left Dan White in clear space for the score. Selby Sniffed victory and after great work down the line from Tom O'Neil who perhaps should have scored himself the ball was recycled after a few phases for Christian Townend to cross the line with the extras being tagged over once again by Adamson, Adamson rounded the victory off as he scored his own try after good work from the "waterboy" Tom Rich who kept the players hydrated throughout the match.

Wetherby never gave up and Hogan eventually got the try his performance had deserved from all of 1 meter out he crashed under the posts to make the score line a little closer.

All in all a great afternoons work by all of the 27 players who showed up making life difficult for Captain Rawlins but hopefully a good sign of things to come. Thanks to the lads from the 4ths that did turn up but also to the ones who travelled with the 5ths to YMCA, great club spirit.

Thanks also to Wetherby 2's who were a great bunch and fought throughout the match.
