Selby versus Goole in the Yorkshire Bowl Quarter Finals

Selby versus Goole in the Yorkshire Bowl Quarter Finals

Selby and Driffield U15s again joined forces for this local derby Yorkshire Bowl tie against Goole. With both teams able to field full squads and with the undercurrent of the traditional Selby-Goole rivalry the spectators were expecting a good game and from the first kick it was clear Selby were out to prove a point. The away team put the first score on the board when winger Hedley Benn-Harris touched down after three minutes of play, soon followed up by a second from Driffield’s James Naylor. Selby then settled into 20 minutes of the best rugby they’ve played; the forwards winning scrums and rucks against their much heavier counterparts and providing plenty of possession to the backs who were moving and passing with such great speed and fluidity that before long Captain Ollie Uren, Naylor, Noah Dobson (2) and Sam Perrin had scored another 5 tries between them, with Uren converting most. As the first half wore on some Selby indiscipline started to creep in and the away team found themselves temporarily down to 14 players. Goole capitalized on the situation and scored two tries of their own to bring themselves back into the game. Selby, however, started the second half in the same way as the first – Driffield’s Cain Robb collecting directly from the re-start and tearing down the left wing to score the try, also kicking the subsequent conversion. The middle of the second half was characterized by much broken play which seemed to suit Goole who scored twice more. The home team were threatening a further try, with Selby defending valiantly on their line, when the ball was cleared to half way, chased down by Driffield’s Charlie Newsome who went on to score. An emphatic victory was sealed with two further tries from Uren and Dobson. This was a great exhibition of teamwork – Driffield and Selby integrating beautifully and everyone, without exception, contributing to the win. Coach Martin Bramley nominated Selby’s front row of Jack Webster, Max Burdekin and Rob Parker as joint men of the match.
