Selby RUFC U14
On Sunday, Selby’s U14s travelled across to Mallorie Park, Ripon for an end of season finale. With sun shining, Selby began their determined play and took the lead with a cross-pitch pass to Abrams who ran it over the line hotly pursued by Ripon. A conversion kick by Hammell saw the score 7-0 to Selby. Ripon re-grouped and responded purposefully with a try under the posts and a successful conversion. With a swap of players to bring on Selby’s new recruit Vickers, the play moved back and forth, as each side drove forward and counter tackled and rucked. Finally, an opportunity from Stephens with a half-pitch run put Selby in the lead again. However, Selby’s hesitancy in meeting the driving Ripon players lead to an equalising of the score close to half time. Runs by Abrams and Bishop came close but they were brought down just before the line, leaving the half time score as 14 all. The second half saw Ripon monopolise the score despite Selby’s good defensive play. Selby lost opportunities to convert effort into tries, with Ripon racking up 2 further tries before a response from Bishop grabbed another for Selby. As the final minutes ticked away, a fast sprint from Ripon saw another behind the posts try and a final conversion as the whistle blew. A competitive end to the season for both sides. Selby now look forward to their junior presentation day in June and a well-earned rest before the new playing season in October.
