Guidance for Under 6 year old players in Rugby Union

The Rugby continuum published by the Rugby Football Union regulates and provides guidance on the playing and coaching of children in the age grades Under 7 to Under 12. A child enters the Under 7 Continuum age grade on their 6th birthday rather than the school year.

The following guidance is taken from the RFU statement on the participation of very young players - Under 6 year olds.

1. The main focus at this age is to provide children with rugby related activities in a safe, ENJOYABLE and un-pressurised environment. The format of the sessions are designed to give these children confidence in carrying out basic movement skills, in the context of fair play, sharing and co-operation.
2. All children must be registered with the club. We usually advise that a player is first introduced to Tag rugby for 3 to 4 sessions before we ask you to pay the annual subscription
3. Players must in Reception Year (4 - 5 year old) and/or Year 1 (5 - 6 year old). Players must now stay with their age group and not move up to Under 7’s mid season. We therefore have a lower Micros (Yellow/Green bibs) and an upper Micros (Red/Blue bibs) mix.
4. Parents/guardians must remain by the pitch side at all times - We often find that players at this age require comforting at times and it is better to send them to parents/guardians for this.
5. Training sessions are for 1 hour – 10:30am to 11.30am. Subject to weather at the coaches’ discretion.
6. Parents may withdraw a player at any time during the session. All we ask is that you make the Coaches or Manager aware if you are leaving.
7. The Coaches are well trained and have experience of working with children of this age group and therefore if you have any questions regarding the sessions please ask.
8. Away matches - Many clubs do not have Micro or Under 6 age groups and therefore the Selby Micros will be training at home throughout the season.
9. In order to avoid slipping, players should be equipped with boots with studs as soon as possible. For health and safety reasons we may need to withdraw any player without boots if the pitch conditions warrant it.
10. TAG is a non contact game and therefore no other protections, gum shields etc are recommended at this level.
11. Kit can be purchased from the club shop, which is open on a Sunday and a Thursday (night), however there is no requirement to purchase club kit at this stage. Players should wear a number of layers of clothing in order to stay dry and warm. Players should also have water bottles.

1. Well done! You have made a great choice in introducing your child to a wonderful sport.
2. Read the RFU code for Parents/Guardians
3. The ball we play with is a size 3, buy one and have a go at passing it with your son/daughter.
4. Get involved - watch, encourage, laugh, shout , clap etc - it all encourages the players and makes a difference
5. Lend a hand - If you want to help, ask the Manager and Coach
6. At the end of each session we always do a quick briefing, do come up and listen or ask any questions you want.
7. You will receive email newsletters from the Manager, provided we have your email address. This will keep you informed of team progress, club matters and events. n up at a training session.
